Pedro Almodovar is quickly making himself the queen bitch of backhanded compliments. Yesterday, seconds after Angelina Jolie asked Pedro to give her a part in one of his films during the middle of an interview, Pedro turned to reporters and told them that Angie had the awesome potential to play a "white trash" role:
"She [Angelina] could have played Pepi in Pepi, Lucy y Bon. But she can also play what is referred to as 'white trash,' like Carmen Maura's character in ¿Que Hecho Yo Para Merecer Esto? -- as in, messed up hair, no makeup."
¡Que perra!
And just in case you haven't seen ¿Que Hecho Yo Para Merecer Esto?, this is the character Almodovar figures Jolie can play:

Hilarity.

Ok, two things wrong with this post. One, being compared to Carmen Maura in "¿Que Hecho Yo Para Merecer Esto?", the lead actress in the film, is by no means a bad thing. And two, that still is not from "¿Que Hecho Yo Para Merecer Esto?", nor is it Carmen Maura. Not quit being a sisañosa mujer.
ReplyNobody said being compared to Carmen Maura was a bad thing -- not Almodovar, not me. In the interview above Almodovar simply states Angie would be ideal as the "white trash" character that Carmen plays in QHYPME -- but not as Carmen herself. And the still IS from QHYPME: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63P3XYwnLok -- it's the weird coffee sequence.
ReplyOrale! But i still don't see where the backhand is coming from, many of Almodovar's great characters are simply that, Spanish Trash. Pero como me encanta el chisme and a good ol cat-fit, I'll hop on board the bitch train. Plus, it's Angelina Jolie. Meh!
ReplyThis isn't the first time Angelina has praised or mentioned that she's wanted to do something with Almodovar. I find it annoying; it's like she wants to work on something legit so her horrendous resume (Mr. and Ms. Smith, Tomb Raider -- WTF?) will look slightly credible. It's typical of "sex bombs" or other good-looking people to do the same *cough* James Franco *cough*. I think Almodovar's comment is backhanded because he knows Angie only does "hot" roles but he passively-aggressively pulls a "Oh, sure, you can be in one of my movies -- but playing a piece of trash."
