Jorge Ramos' beloved 12 year-old family dog Sunset has died of heart and kidney failure after a long illness. If that isn't sad enough, the Univision anchor wrote a heart-wrenching eulogy to her on his blog. It's translated below:
Sunset went the same way she came, suddenly, without warning, without a bark. And it has left, for my family and me, a huge hole, much larger than the hole where she kept her bones in the garden.
She was a strange mixture of peasant with beagle, black, with irregular white spots on the face and the perfect size, neither too large nor too small.
Sunset was named after the street in Miami where she was found. She was a stray. No one claimed her and she ended up at a veterinarian's office where we met her. We walked her down the block, and by the time we were headed back, she had won us over. She was part of the family. Nothing changed for almost 12 years.
She could read me better than anyone. No exaggeration. If I dressed in my room for jogging, she'd listen excitedly behind the door, ready to accompany me. As if looking through the walls. She loved running with me. But she was always one step ahead, protecting me, clearing the way. She ran hundreds of miles next to the stroller of my son Nicholas and many more in front of my bike. I guess the two of us shared the competitive spirit and a certain shyness.
When we took her to the park in Coconut Grove to spend time with other dogs, she used to isolate in the beginning and it took time to break her shyness to socialize with others of her species. Like me at parties and meetings.
She was the silent accomplice of my first books. She heard the keys of my computer before anyone else. She lay for hours on end at my feet, never impatient or complaining even once.
She was, somehow, Nicholas' second sister. He pulled her tail, put his hands in her mouth and tried to ride her like a horse, but Sunset never did anything back. She just stuck her tongue out between her teeth and turned around to look at me with true compassion and wisdom.
With just a glance, Sunset and I understood each other. We didn't need words. I haven't the slightest doubt about her enormous intelligence and, although it sounds strange, her "humanity."
After my divorce, Sunset stayed home and I went with Lola. Lola, of course, is my cat ( I need to tell you about her soon.) But every time I came home to pick up my son, Sunset was the first to greet me. I've never had more enthusiastic receptions in my life. I watched her nervously looking through the glass, waving her tail furiously and, when I opened the door, she jumped as if we had not seen each other for years. In a beautiful ritual, she began to run at full speed around me and then sit, drooling, next to my car. It was there when she showed her more canine side. The small party culminated when I threw her a few pieces of dried meat I bought in the supermarket. I've never seen a dog (or human) more grateful than Sunset after devouring these meaty gifts.
The last time I saw her she came out of the house with a tennis ball in her mouth. She loved for me to throw the ball in the pool so she could go fetch it. But this last time she didn't let go of the ball. She came out to greet me, she turned around, I caught a glimpse, I think, of some sadness, and she was lost behind the door. It was her farewell.
Sunset died alone. We were in Boston when the vet called to say that her heart and kidneys were failing to work after a long illness. There was no choice but to let her go. I imagine her frightened eyes in those last moments and it breaks my heart that I was not there with her. It is difficult to understand for those who have not grown up with a pet, but Sunset was family. It's that simple. So painful.
We are now crying into our coffee and hugging our dogs. Hambone! I love you!
