It's taken us a few days to fully digest what you're seeing above. You see, Cindy's brother, who lives in Houston, pitched this to us last week. We were dumbfounded. But after checking in with our therapist, taking very high doses of Xanax, and touching base with our west coast informants, we're finally ready to report on the culture shock that is Chuntaritos.com.

The top half of what these dudes are wearing seems fairly normal. It's your typical run-of-the-mill regional Mexican baile outfit. You gonna go see Los Tigres Del Norte or Banda El Recodo? Maybe attend a jaripeo [Mexican rodeo]? Word, this is it. But then your eyes scroll down to the pointy boots -- what in the name of La Santa Virgen Maria?!? Are güeyes serious?
They are.
We fell in love with Chuntaritos.com. The site is filled with hilarious images of chuntaros-gone-wrong. But first, let's clear up one thing; "chuntaros" means a lot of things to a lot of people. We don't care to get into the etymology of the word, because that's another discussion. All we can say is that for the purpose of Chuntaritos.com, it's clearly used to denote tacky Mexicans. It's the type of word that's been thrown around for quite a while now in the western part of the U.S. If you ever lived in Texas, Arizona, Nevada, California, etc., you know what's up.
The only other time we know of Mexicans encounting such bizarre footwear was when Locomia toured Mexico in the early 90's. They wore pointy shoes, too.
But besides pictures of Mexicans with crazy cowboy boots, they also post pictures of all-around naco situations and things. Like this van with an A/C window unit. Some reader photographed it in–you guessed it–Texas. (It's hot in Dallas, man.)

But clothing trends aren't the only things that have uh...evolved (?). Dancing has been taken to new, much more naco levels! Check out Chuntron here dancing in glow-in-the-dark botas de elf.
So why do we claim America is responsible for this? Because most of the pictures featured on Chuntaritos seem to come from Houston, Texas. Also, there are a lot of comments from northern Mexican residents who claim they've never seen anybody wear those atrocious outfits in their home state.
We checked in with our regional Mexican, concert-going peeps who indeed confirmed our assumptions. And it turns out there's a name for them:
"Yes, it's true. It's the new thing in regional Mexican dance clubs that's flourishing mostly in Houston, but we've also seen it in Dallas and as far as Oklahoma. The funny thing is that those guys get a lot of hot girls! People call them 'mupets.' They wear the crazy boots, tight jeans, shirts from the Aeropostal store, and tiny hats."
Thanks, America. This is one mutation of yours that is actually funny. Unlike that other one.

Replylmaf Ok, I've been known have a hidden affection for "chunts" but are you KIDDING ME?! Never in a million years would these dorks be allowed in my HOUSE! What if they kick my cat?! ACK! We have "Fiesta" here too, in San Jose. It's a banda club. I have yet to see THOSE boots there. I'd have to stop going if I did.
ReplyFiesta is a grocery store, girl. I saw this mamon in broad daylight at the grocery store with his three chuntarito sons all wearing botas de elf, too.
ReplyGrocery store? Who has a "Fiesta" in a grocery store?! Ah well, in any case...Fiesta is a restaurant with live Banda night club at night.. It's pretty fun. If I saw those botas de elf in Mi Pueblo (grocery store here) I'd have to stop going there too.
ReplyI need to hit up these banda clubs. I'm missing out on all sorts of extravagant outfits!
