These French snack cakes called Pepito were spotted by a reader in a store in Los Angeles. We think we get it. Mexico discovered chocolate, as recorded in the 2000 French documentary Chocolat, starring French actors Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp, therefore, the symbol in France for authentic chocolate is a little Mexican boy. But, we have it on good word that some Mexicans find the sombrero and peasant outfit a little outdated. (He is pretty cute, though, riding his chocolate cake and exclaiming his trademark "¡Ay Pepito!")
The Pepito brand, it turns out, was created in 1963 by a snack company named Belin and was purchased by French conglomerate Lu in 1997. We're guessing, in 1963, this was a perfectly acceptable way to portray Mexicans. However, ahem. If you'll take a look at the date on your iPhones, ladies and gentlemen, messieurs et mesdames, you'll see that we are currently living in 2010. At least, those of us who don't have to pull a burro to work.
Yes, those are stars swirling around Pepito's head because we whacked that little spic into next week. You can play your own game of Pepito Bong as well as mix your own version of La Bamba at the offcial Pépito website.

Of course, the date on the calendar will not stop the French from enjoying a nice game of Whack-A-Mexican, or as they call it, "Pepito Bong." We know, that has such a better connotation in English.
